Yesterday I wrote that you might not need a HUGE list to accomplish your revenue goal for 2024, and walked you through you a quick calculation for figuring out the actual list size you need. Today I want to follow up on that... What comes after the calculation? Planning + Doubling Down. Now that you know the list number you need,(#putanumberonit), it`s time to make a specific plan for achieving it. That means devising a daily and quarterly plan of activities. 🌺 What activities currently add people to your list? 1) Make sure those activities include a call to action. (Eg put your newsletter link in your link tree, add hemlines to all your posts reminding people to sign up to your newsletter) 2) Double down on the ones that work for you. (Eg If Instagram works, post a specific “Hey! I have a newsletter!” post 1-3X a week and go Live in your Stories more; if blog posts work, publish more blog posts and add content upgrades to them; if live appearances work, host more in-person events, go on more podcasts and virtual events…) 🌺 Put list-building events on your calendar every quarter Is there one event you could implement each quarter to add a couple hundred people (or couple thousand) to your list? (Eg challenges, free webinars, online summits…) Yes, List-building IS revenue building… and no, you might not need that big of a list to achieve your goal revenue. And list-building doesn`t happen by itself. It`s not about posting and hoping people sign up. It`s about creating quarterly events and daily invitations so that people DO sign up. We`re trained to believe that huge social media followings & massive lists are what it takes to build a successful business.⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ That might only be true if you`re in the low-price, high-volume business (think: Walmart).⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ For many service businesses who use online traffic as their sales engine, a list of 1,000 or 2,000 people can deliver a FLOURISHING business.⠀
AND: you can also run a thriving business by having a sales engine that does not involve content marketing. In that case...ignore this entire post 🙂
🌺 NOTE: a huge social media following does not necessarily equate to a big list or business.
I`ve seen LOTS of people with 30,000 or 100,000 social media followers with no list & no sales.⠀⠀ 🌺 ⠀ So let’s do 2 quick calculations to to figure out the list size you need for YOUR goals. ⠀ ⠀ Step 1.⠀Find your Revenue-to-Subscriber Quotient ⠀
Take your current annual revenue⠀⠀ 🌺Divide it by your current list size⠀⠀ = revenue per subscriber⠀ ⠀ Eg current revenue of$50,000 / 1,000 subscribers = $50 in revenue per subscriber⠀ ⠀ Now use the R:S Quotient to project the list size you need to accomplish your new revenue goal.⠀ ⠀ Step 2. Find Your Goal List Size⠀
🌺Define your Future Goal Revenue⠀⠀ 🌺Divide it by your R:S Quotient (eg $50)⠀⠀ = this is how big your list needs to be⠀ ⠀ Eg desired revenue of $100,000/$50 per subscriber = list of 2,000 people⠀ ⠀ (Everyone`s ratio will be different -- it`s based on your actual revenue history)⠀ ⠀⠀ The point of this exercise is to define your current R:S ratio, calculate what you want to earn, and then project the list size you need to achieve that number.⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ And then do *that* (and only that).
No busy work or ego-driven numbers required.
