Ah! I’ve been reading along for awhile, but am commenting for the first time just because I too am an unmarried mama of 2 (boys) pregnant with my third (boy) right now and “engaged.” really we aren’t engaged at all. I have no idea if I want to get married again, but it just makes conversations and the expressions on peoples faces more manageable for me. I too “err on the side of trashy” and my relationship with my current partner is informed by the research of Sex at Dawn as well. I just wanted to send a hello to you because I love your writing and am finding similarities to us more and more as your story evolves here. So- Hola from Costa Rica, and thanks for sharing of yourself here.

It really is awkward when someone asks you something that grazes your sensibilities like that. I hate that embarrassing grapple for a response. It’s also incredibly frustrating whenever you come up with THE perfect response AFTER such a conversation. SO think of the question and come up with an exemplary response ahead of time. I like ya thinkin’.

In my case, it’s the fact I’ve just moved in with the boyfriend sans engagement ring on my finger. Suffice it to say, people are beginning to ask if we’re planning to get married, if we’re engaged already (yeah right, because we’d keep that top secret)… ARGH!

My new response, “Living in sin is waaay more fun.”

Ha, stick that up your pipe and smoke it.

I love how you own your own stuff. I am able to do that pretty well with my blog now, but carrying that over into my life would definitely help in so many situations.

One request you may want to practice: ‘can I see the cocktail menu?’ then pick whatever fancy cocktail you like, ask for a virgin one, with the alcohol replaced with soda water or ginger ale or whatever. Works for me, doesn’t feel like deprivation.
