What stood out for me (besides every gorgeous word) was: There are frustrated, frazzled parents who get by on next-to-no cheerleading.

Betcherass they do : ) Brilliant and uplifting post. Thanks Kelly.

Feminism is about choice and empowerment. I would say you're even more authentically feminist now that you've followed your heart. The other perspective could be said to be a lopsided view of women and power. (though understandable)

Raising your children, serving your family, and your craft is incredibly powerful. Willingly serving people is love, not slavery. Besides, Betty Crocker invaded all of our homes like a ninja, did she not?

As someone who is struggling to find the finer points of my purpose, I really appreciate the reminder in this piece. Instead of agonizing over what people may think, or of I've got it wrong...I'm just gonna live for my soul as much as possible and be satisfied with what that brings to me.

Love.

Hi Kelly,
I feakin' laughed out loud, a big roaring laugh at this: Motherfucking Betty Crocker. With a pen.
That is the name of your best seller...right there. Ha!

Love your story, you can go wrong with that dream. Relationships are the best thing we have in this life time.
Got married at 17, pregnant. Had four little daughters by 22. I was not fuckin BC and never wanted to be. Yet somehow unconsciously or consciously that's what I chose. And I do have to say except for the cooking I stuck it out and did one helluva job. It's our 40th anniversary in Jan. Oldest just turned 39 and my oldest grandchild is a high school senior. I did go to college late got a masters degree in counseling psych blah blah...the best is my family and relationships, I have with them. It's not easy and sometimes a family isn't pretty but it's all about love and with hearts wide open ya get through it all.

I hear you. It's the same (embarassing) conclusion that I've come to myself.

Here's another realisation I've had. In the world today, women are pushed to deny their most outrageous awesomeness, to conform, hence the vilification of women like Hillary Clinton and Martha Stewart, women of power, women who have made a public declaration of their right to the top-most rung of the ladder. Or, as alternate example, Megan Fox. There are those who hate her outrageous, unrepentant sexuality.

But the same forces that would push women away from blazing their light too brightly by calling them 'too masculine' or 'whore' also push women at the other end of the tail, who conflate softness and unconditional love and devotion with 'weak', 'submissive' and 'less than'.

We have to fight that shit man. And we have to realise that those of us who are soft and those of us who are strong (which are frequently the same people) are in the same fight together to not have to be blandly and 'safely' in the middle without any spark or grace.

I keep trying to find a purpose that is also a way of making a living. Thanks for the suggestion that the two might not be the intersecting circles of a Venn diagram. Or that the slice of intersection is small. Thanks for the suggestion that we give ourselves permission to consider our purpose something for which we don't earn money. I don't know--just something I needed to hear today.
