I’m totally enamored of our president, and am happy to share his love with you and Michelle. He is SUCH a wonderful human being, and I’m appalled that people like Michael Steele could only wait about 20 seconds after the announcement of the Nobel Prize to denounce it, and him, and claim it to be bogus… Yeah. His celebrity is a problem… Oh. My. God. If this had happened to George Bush they would have closed the schools and held a parade or six. Sorry. I got a little carried away.

But as for Sophie– I love what you model for her, and what is in your heart for her. I still cringe at the dumb princess stuff, and it’s largely Disney, but it goes beyond that. The concept is so pervasive it’s disheartening. I marched in the ’70s, and one of my daughter’s favorite early pictures of herself is in a tee shirt that read “The ERA is for my future.” A woman in the grocery store looked down her nose at us and said that I shouldn’t politicize my children. Right– why don’t I let other people teach my children their values– that sounds like a good idea… Grrr…

Hi Kelly
I have been reading your blog since Danielle LaPorte introduced me. I am really impressed with your insights and wisdom. Thank you for the things that you have said about Barak and about being a parent of mixed race children and being a mother of girls. All things I can relate to. My older 3 kids are from West Africa (they were part of the package when I met their father). When Obama’s inauguration occured I asked them if they would like to stay home from school to watch. My sons said – mom we are from Africa, we know that black people can be presidents!. My daughter wanted to though as she said that she wanted her children to tell he children about history someday. I was impressed with all of their responses and we discussed this again with Obama’s historic win.

You make me smile, laugh, nod knowingly, shake my head, and think new, bigger, and amazing thoughts: as a mom, a woman, and another soul who loves Barak Obama! Thank you – again.

And if it’s any encouragement, my daughters are now 11 and 13 and think that Disney princesses are silly and a huge waste of time. We’ve totally moved on to better models: Hannah Montana, Sonny with a Chance, the Wizards of Waverly Place…All Disney, too! Aaaaugh! May as well just give them the kool-ade to drink!

I’m with you: Obama should definitely take on Disney!!! PLEASE!
