Ooh. I had to skip a few entries when I was quickly scrolling down the page and saw “the law of attraction” fly by in this title.

As you know by now, I advocate the Law of Attraction on my blog and in my life. I even plan to write a book on it. I do, however, agree with you on all counts.

What I believe about the LoA is that when we apply thought AND action AND feeling TOGETHER to something that the universe/god/godself/buddy christ/santa claus/someone-something conspires for things beyond our direct influence to supplement our efforts. It’s like creating luck.

And I do believe that negative thoughts AND actions AND feelings have the same effect to our detriment.

You’ll never hear me advocate anything less than all out, fierce effort and focus…and faith (or confidence if faith is uncomfortable). Not wishful thinking…that’s a sucker’s game.

I hope to turn on people to the power of their thoughts as only part of the “magic” and to do so in a way that makes practical sense, always by example.

There is a lot to like about parts of LoA (a positive attitude *can* increase the likelihood of encountering a positive attitude from others; as Monica wrote, it can help you *notice* "magical" things more; accountability for one's own part in the creation of one's life, etc), but what you said, absolutely.

The anecdote (heh) I like to pull out to point out its effed-up-ed-ness (like my new word?) was when a black guy told about getting pulled over for driving while black, the LoA practitioner asked "Well what did you do to invite that in your life?" Because, of course, getting stopped by a racist cop was all *his* fault. Because he didn't think white enough?

There are a lot of people I admire who are in to LoA, and I try to love them anyway. But it's nice when I don't have to get past that. Which is why I so love you. (Plus, Picard! Mmmm, Picard...)

Hi Kelly, first off thanks for the tweet. I’ve just been checking out bits and pieces of your website, and I respect your honesty that comes through, though some of the things I don’t see eye to eye completely, I can see the validity in your blog entries. It’s strange I use to work as a dating coach, and I remember one of the things that some of my friends never got was that if they sat at home, hoping that something “magical” would happen in finding somebody…well good luck. So yes action is incredibly important and I think that’s the missing message of LoA. Interpreted to literally it can be very harmful.

I agree! Positive thinking won’t make magical things happen in your life, but it might make you notice the magical things you already have… children, love, friendship…LIFE!! that is all pretty amazing stuff!

Yes, this! (Especially the Captain Picard bit – yum.) This articulates EXACTLY the reasons I was oh so happy that I checked out “The Secret” from the library instead of paying twenty bucks for it.

KD: I bought it. I feel so much better now that I have said it out loud. That book was dangerous to my health – I nearly choked on my chocolate bar when I came to the chapter that says you can lose weight simply by thinking about it. Caloric deficits…nah. Just think really thin.
